Privacy Policy
In short: we collect only what we need to run and mark your mock exams, we never sell your data, waitlist emails are stored encrypted, speaking audio uploaded for marking is deleted after 7 days, and you can have everything deleted at any time.
1. Who we are
Examli (“Examli”, “we”, “us”) runs the Examli mobile app and this website from the United Kingdom. We are the controller of the personal information described in this policy under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. You can reach us at support@examli.app.
This policy covers the waitlist on this website and the Examli app. Examli is an independent IELTS practice service and is not connected to the official IELTS test partners.
2. Information we collect
When you join the waitlist
- Your email address, which is encrypted before it is stored (see Security).
- The phone you plan to use (Android, iPhone or both) and, if you choose, your target band.
- When you joined, which form you used, and whether you confirmed your email.
- A temporary, scrambled code derived from your internet connection, used only to stop repeated automated signups. It changes every day, can't be turned back into your IP address, and is discarded within an hour. It is never stored with your signup.
When you use the app
- Account details: your name, email address and sign-in credentials. Passwords are handled by our authentication provider and are never visible to us.
- Study profile: answers you give during onboarding, such as why you're taking IELTS, your current and target band, and when your exam is.
- Exam activity: your answers to Listening and Reading questions, your Writing responses, timings, and the estimated bands and feedback we produce.
- Voice data: during Speaking, audio from your microphone is streamed to our AI examiner and may be recorded and transcribed so your answers can be assessed. The microphone is only used after you start a speaking task. We don't use your voice to identify you.
- Purchases: your mock credit balance and transaction records. Payments are processed by Google Play or the Apple App Store, and we never receive your card details.
- Technical data: device type, operating system, app version, and crash and error logs needed to keep the service working.
4. How we use it and our legal bases
| Purpose | Legal basis (UK GDPR) |
|---|---|
| Confirming your email and telling you when Examli opens | Your consent, which you can withdraw at any time |
| Blocking spam and automated waitlist signups | Our legitimate interest in protecting the waitlist and the people on it |
| Creating your account and running mock exams | Performing our contract with you |
| Assessing your Speaking and Writing and producing estimated bands | Performing our contract with you |
| Managing credits, purchases and automatic refunds | Performing our contract; legal obligations (tax and accounting) |
| Keeping the service secure and fixing bugs | Our legitimate interests in a safe, reliable service |
| Improving questions and marking quality using aggregated, de-identified data | Our legitimate interests |
5. AI marking and the speaking examiner
Examli uses AI models to run the live speaking examiner, transcribe speech and assess Speaking and Writing against the public IELTS band descriptors. Your responses are sent to our AI providers only to perform these tasks. We use these services on business terms under which the providers may not use your content to train their models.
Scores are automated estimates for practice only. They don't have legal or similarly significant effects on you, and they are not official IELTS results. If you think a result is wrong, email us and a person will review it.
7. International transfers
Some of our providers process data outside the UK, including in the United States. When that happens we rely on UK adequacy regulations (including the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework) or the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum, so your information keeps an equivalent level of protection.
8. How long we keep it
- Unconfirmed waitlist signups: deleted automatically after 7 days.
- Confirmed waitlist signups: until we've sent your launch invitation, then for up to 12 months unless you create an account. Unsubscribing deletes them immediately.
- Anti-spam connection codes: discarded within an hour.
- Speaking audio uploaded for marking: deleted automatically after 7 days.
- Account, results and transcripts: for as long as your account is open. When you ask us to delete your account, we delete or anonymise this data within 30 days, except where the law requires us to keep it longer.
- Purchase records: as long as UK tax and accounting rules require, usually 6 years.
9. Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you can ask us to:
- give you a copy of your personal information;
- correct information that is wrong;
- delete your information or your whole account;
- restrict or object to certain processing;
- send your information to you or another service in a portable format;
- withdraw your consent at any time, for example to leave the waitlist.
To leave the waitlist, use the “Unsubscribe and delete my details” link in any email from us. It deletes your signup straight away.
For anything else, including deleting your app account, email support@examli.app. We'll reply within one month and may ask you to confirm it's really you.
If you're unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk, 0303 123 1113). If you live in the EU, you can also contact your local data protection authority. We'd appreciate the chance to put things right first.
California residents: you have the right to know, delete and correct personal information and not to be discriminated against for using these rights. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising.
10. Security
Waitlist: your email is encrypted with AES-256 on our server before it's stored. The spreadsheet holding the waitlist only ever contains that scrambled version, and the key to unlock it is kept separately, never in Google. The waitlist can't be read through this website, and adding to it requires a secret code only our server has.
App: data is encrypted in transit and at rest by our infrastructure providers, and security rules make sure each account can only read its own exam data. Our own access is limited to what's needed to run the service.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach puts your information at risk, we'll tell the ICO within 72 hours where the law requires it, and tell you without undue delay.
11. Children
Examli is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you are under 18, please use Examli only with a parent or guardian's permission. If you believe a child under 13 has given us information, email us and we will delete it.
12. Changes to this policy
We'll update this page when our practices change and revise the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect.
